The idea of “mundane” is kind of funny. Noth The idea of “mundane” is kind of funny.
Nothing is ever the same.
Nothing is ever even ordinary, if only you put enough of your attention on it.
For whatever reason, the distinction of being nice For whatever reason, the distinction of being nice vs kind has stuck with me ever since I was made aware of it.
Ep 76
The Deeper Responsibility of Photographing a Family with Childhood Photographer Carly Mitchell
As someone that loves to comfort and make people happy, it’s something I purposely and often check in with myself on. Being nice is so much easier than being kind. Being nice satisfies this moment. Being kind is doing something that may feel uncomfortable or scary in order to act in what you believe to be the highest good for another.
That’s what I feel when I think about the impulse of saying “yes” to an initial ask/client inquiry vs pushing back where I see opportunity for more, giving context, and helping someone see a more enduring possibility they may not have considered before- even if that requires the uncomfortable task of questioning the perspective of a 30 yr later version of themselves (this stranger you haven’t even officially met yet).
((Whenever I get ghosted after an inquiry I totally envision them being like jeeeeez chill dude I just want some pics. lol i don’t blame them, being reminded of impermanence & aging can be a bit of a buzzkill sometimes))
okay back to the point-
When Childhood Photographer Carly Mitchell wrote a blog entitled “We were together, I forget the rest: On Family Photo Session Locations” on the importance of really considering family photo session locations, I knew I wanted to hear more from her.
In this conversation, Carly & I chat about true responsibility in photographing a family, making intentional choices in the work/offerings you create, and what is behind the heart/human of it all.

You ever come back from a trip and think “yeah, You ever come back from a trip and think “yeah, it’s gonna take me a while to unpack that one.”
(Mentally- not physically.)
((But actually yes, physically too. Dunno what’s worse- packing or unpacking. ))
That was Sedona for me.
And although photographing landscapes is not something I usually gravitate towards, I realized something important while being met with such grand views- the only way that I feel like I can digest something so big and stunning is to abstract it.
I must find a different way to look at it because otherwise I’m too overwhelmed to take it in.
This helps me understand other parts of my work.
(And my life)
>>Sometimes by working outside of your zone, you can see the forest through the trees.
Orrrrr The the desert through the mountains.
Orrrrrrrrrrr the red rocks THROUGH THE SNOW ❄️ 🏔️
I was on the plane this morning boggled at how 575 I was on the plane this morning boggled at how 575 mph can look and feel like nothing at all.
And then I land in time to have breakfast in a different state from where I woke up.
This is how I feel as a person.
Baffled at how I keep having the same conversations with myself but then realizing how worlds different the conversations have become.
Growth feels so slow sometimes but so does 575 mph. đź’¨
